Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users purchasing such drugs must be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Doctors believe the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful return of cravings.
"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.
This challenge is worsened if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle changes.
