In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Government Consultations Underway
In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
