A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's key public works projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” stated the country's president.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital undertakings.
