Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to question specific rulings made by the official, echoing the protocol already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
